The 2012 1694 Classification is limited to 2,770 bottles this year, and is a blend of 62% Syrah and 38% Cabernet Sauvignon. It has a feisty nose with plenty of upfront black cherry and blackberry aromas, touches of rosemary and sage, and a whole bloomin' bunch of violets too. The palate is medium-bodied with smooth tannin, the 15% alcohol neatly disguised, very sensual in the mouth with a surprisingly sweet, fleshy and seductive finish. There is impressive composure to this wine; it is refreshingly elegant for a flagship label, though I hope to see more complexity evolve during bottle age.

This offers an impressive core of raspberry, blackberry and boysenberry pâte de fruit flavors that match the ambitious licorice and sweet toast frame. Shows iron and savory streaks through the finish, pulling this together wonderfully. Needs to settle a bit in the cellar. Best from 2018 through 2025. 231 cases made.
