Castello di Fonterutoli is in Chianti. The large estate has been owned by the family of Marchesi Mazzei since the 15th century and today includes nearly 300 acres of vineyards. The estate makes classic Sangiovese-based Chianti as well as Super Tuscans that are Sangiovese and Merlot blends. The Mazzei family also has wine estates in the Maremma region of Tuscany and in Sicily. In Maremma La Tenuta Belguardo makes Sangiovese wines as well as whites. At the Zisola estate in Sicily the family makes Nero d’Avola wines. Gambero Rosso has often awarded its highest ranking of 3 glasses to Castello di Fonterutoli’s Chiantis. Says Gambero Rosso: “The style of these wines typically shows powerful structure and extremely ripe fruit, as well as marked grip and energy alongside balance, elegance and strength.”
