Rendered entirely from Chardonnay grown in their Pinot-dominated home town of Tours-sur-Marne – though not labeled “Blanc de Blancs” – the Lamiables’ 2007 Brut Cuvee Pheerie displays a tight, bright, though by no means thin character, its initial impression of apple-tartness belying the family’s proclivity for putting their wines through malo. The finish glows with cyanic apple pip and peach kernel, lemon- and grapefruit rind adding to a show of pronounced piquancy with just enough primary juiciness to refresh. This is highly distinctive, if not especially sensually satisfying. I would plan monitoring its evolution carefully. But I would certainly plan to enjoy this bottling soon. Jean-Pierre and daughter Ophelie Lamiable bottle at least half a dozen cuvees, of which I sampled only three, not including a current rendition of the site-specific Blanc de Noirs Les Meslaines for which they are perhaps best-known.
