The 2016 Goulée by Cos d'Estournel is unquestionably the more forward, front-end loaded release. It has attractive tobacco and herbal notes as well as plenty of dark fruits, medium body, a supple, rounded texture, and a good finish. It’s a satisfying, balanced, high-quality wine from a great estate.

It has a deep garnet-purple color and opens with youthful notes of crushed red and black plums, cherries and blackberries with touches of chocolate mint and tobacco. The palate is medium-bodied with plenty of juicy red and black fruits, framed by soft tannins and finishing with a minty lift.
James Suckling: 93
Deep, dark and rich fruit, from plums to berries. Full bodied, layered, dense and very rich.
Wine Spectator: 90
Takes a modern approach at first, with a glistening coat of sweet, vanilla-accented toast around a core of plush plum and blackberry puree flavors. A swath of tobacco and flashes of iron and cherry pit on the finish keep this grounded.
Wine Enthusiast: 89
Full of ripe fruit that gives an almost opulent character, this powerful wine is packed with tannins. A touch of dark chocolate contrasts with the black-currant fruits and acidity. The wine will develop relatively quickly and be ready to drink from 2021. (RV) Full of ripe fruit that gives an almost opulent character, this powerful wine is packed with tannins.
