Jean-Baptiste Geoffroy, who has 14 hectares in the Vallée de la Marne, is the fifth generation in his family to grow grapes in the region. While his family has always made a little wine, they began to emphasize Champagne production in the bad years after World War II, when they were unable to sell their grapes to the big houses. In the 1970’s Mr. Geoffroy’s father decided to keep all the grapes and turn them into Champagne. Walking through a hillside vineyard in Cumières overlooking the Marne, Mr. Geoffroy’s parcels were easy to distinguish from the others. The lush green grass growing between his rows of bare vines was evidence of his distaste for chemical pesticides and herbicides. "If you don't have passion, you won't make very good Champagne," he said as he strolled the vineyard, waving at local hunters who also walked the rows, shotguns in hand, searching for rabbits and pheasants. While this prominent grower estate has recently moved to the village of Aÿ, the Geoffroy name is inextricably linked to that of Cumières, where the family has winegrowing roots that date back to the 17th century. Our vision is to make rich and unforgettable wines that are true to the special place they come from. The story of Catena is the story of Argentine wine. Founded in 1902, Argentina’s Bodega Catena Zapata is known for its pioneering role in resurrecting Malbec and in discovering extreme high altitude terroirs in the Andean foothills of Mendoza. The family’s Adrianna Vineyard at almost 5,000 feet elevation has been called the Grand Cru of South America. Ambonnay Pinot Noir seems to be the sweetest, most Volnay-like in the Montagne de Reims. Bouzy, in contrast, is darker but more earthy, while Aÿ is firmer with less overt berried fruit. The Ambonnay signature might be strawberry, forest-floor, sweet-100s. All of which are certainly present in Billiot’s wines. -Terry Theise “Billiot’s five hectares of vines are all in Ambonnay, spread over 18 parcels. Even more impressive is that all but one of their parcels are on the mid-slope, in the most favored portion of the vineyard area, expressing the classical character of this famous village. “The wines of Ambonnay are very vinous, with a lot of strength,” says Serge’s daughter, Laetitia “but they are also very fine, with delicacy and finesse. They stay fresh for a long time.” All of the wines are fermented in enameled steel tanks, which Billiot prefers to stainless steel, and the wines are neither fined nor filtered. In addition, they do not go through malolactic: “We have 100-percent grand cru vines, which always give a high degree of maturity,” says Serge Billiot, “so we don’t need the malo.” -Peter Liem, Champagneguide.net

["Country_France","Magnum Champagne party","Pick of the week_Pick Off the Week","Price_$51 - $100","PROMO","Region_Champagne","Section 2_Large Format","Size_1.5 L","Subregion_Ambonnay","Type_Champagne","Type_Sparkling","Vintage_NV","Vintagerange_MV and NV","Weight_7.00","Winery_Henri Billiot
"option1":"Default Title","option2":null,"option3":null
["Default Title
["//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1997/1819/products/NV-Henri-Billiot-Brut-reserve_c3d3bbec-4ee4-4801-a3f7-4eedc9464651.png?v=1517352719
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1997/1819/products/NV-Henri-Billiot-Brut-reserve_c3d3bbec-4ee4-4801-a3f7-4eedc9464651.png?v=1517352719
Title

Country: France

Region: Champagne

Subregion: Ambonnay

Vintage: NV

Size: 1.5 L

Ambonnay is Pinot land; 350 hectares and only 20 of them Chardonnay.
