Jean-Baptiste Geoffroy, who has 14 hectares in the Vallée de la Marne, is the fifth generation in his family to grow grapes in the region. While his family has always made a little wine, they began to emphasize Champagne production in the bad years after World War II, when they were unable to sell their grapes to the big houses. In the 1970’s Mr. Geoffroy’s father decided to keep all the grapes and turn them into Champagne. Walking through a hillside vineyard in Cumières overlooking the Marne, Mr. Geoffroy’s parcels were easy to distinguish from the others. The lush green grass growing between his rows of bare vines was evidence of his distaste for chemical pesticides and herbicides. "If you don't have passion, you won't make very good Champagne," he said as he strolled the vineyard, waving at local hunters who also walked the rows, shotguns in hand, searching for rabbits and pheasants. When Benoît took over the reins from his father, in 1991, the estate consisted of 12 hectares planted to grapes intended for table wine; he immediately began replanting the vineyards to the noble varieties traditional to the region, and over the years the family has slowly expanded the property to over 80 hectares. As they acquired more land, they decided to maintain a polyculture property to give the vines a richer ecosystem, and they increasingly turned to organic practices. Today the estate has several years of fully organic viticulture behind it, and the Dardés have begun the official conversion process for certification. For Benoît Dardé, “winegrowing is not a pleasure—it’s a passion.” The Dardés have been farming the Costières de Nîmes for five generations. Founder Hippolyte Dardé was born in Béziers and had moved to Paris to sell wine. Unable to stay away from the vineyards, he found land in the Costières de Nîmes and started his own domaine, Château Grande Cassagne, in 1887. Benoît continues the family tradition with the same commitment. He attended viticultural school and returned to the domaine in 1991 when his father, Jean-Claude Dardé, retired. At the time, the domaine consisted of 12 hectares planted to grapes intended for table wines. He began a wide-scale replanting primarily to the classic noble varietals of Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Roussanne and Grenache Blanc. Over the years, they have added to the vineyard holdings and now farm 84 hectares. Just recently, Benoît’s son, Paul, joined the domaine, and the entire family works together in both the vineyards and the cellars with no set division of labor.

["Country_France","Pick of the week_Pick Off the Week","Price_$0 - $50","Region_Rhone","Size_750 ml.","Specials_Sale","Type_Rose","Varietal_Grenache","Varietal_Syrah","Vintage_2015","Vintagerange_2011 - 2017","Weight_5.00","Winery_Grande Cassagne
"option1":"Default Title","option2":null,"option3":null
["Default Title
["//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1997/1819/products/22_19081791-875e-48f5-afc4-7f1da0f23673.jpg?v=1517353192
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1997/1819/products/22_19081791-875e-48f5-afc4-7f1da0f23673.jpg?v=1517353192
Title

Country: France

Region: Rhone

Varietal: Grenache; Syrah

Vintage: 2015

Size: 750 ml.

Benoît Dardé and his son Paul are the fifth and sixth generations to work the land of the Costières de Nîmes. It was a time when the Champagne mind share was dominated by the ubiquitous Grand Marques. For the musically inclined, they were perhaps the Milli Vanilli of their era – nice presentation, lacking in substance, and completely unavoidable. Even in those commercialized times, there were many small growers still plainly going about the only business they and their families had ever known, making world class wines the public did not yet know it needed. Thanks to these tireless artisans, the world has come to recognize the art form that we now lovingly refer to as ‘Farmer Fizz.’ One such humble luminary, who took his lovingly farmed and exquisitely placed Pinot Noir to Champagne’s absolute heights, is the venerable Francis Egly, of Egly-Ouriet. “Egly was among the first producers to emerge in the grower Champagne movement. As such, he is perhaps sometimes overlooked in favor of some of his younger colleagues. Make no mistake about it, though, these wines are at the very top of the pecking order in Champagne today.” – Antonio Galloni Francis Egly Francis Egly in Ambonnay Francis is the fourth generation of the Egly family to make wines from their exceptionally located, old vine vineyards in the Grand Cru village of Ambonnay – home to some of the greatest Pinot Noir that can be found in all of France. Francis took over from his father Michel in 1980, with the intent and commitment to take these already revered Pinot Noir dominant Champagnes to the absolute apex of quality. His first step in the process was to farm his vineyards using organic practices, at a time when such a decision was nowhere close to being in fashion. Yields were reduced, and regular ploughing was employed. Since 1989 the estate has been in the hands of Laurent Champs, the fifth generation of the family to take the helm of the house. The majority of Vilmart’s 11 hectares of vines lie in Rilly-la-Montagne, although there are a few plots just over the border in the neighboring village of Villers-Allerand. Vilmart is a member of Ampelos, an organization that promotes organic and sustainable viticulture, and Champs has never used any herbicides or chemical fertilizers since taking over the estate. All of the vineyards are planted with cover crops and plowed, and Champs enjoys an additional advantage in that his parcels are relatively large—only 12 different parcels over 11 hectares—meaning that he is more protected from contamination by chemical treatments in neighboring plots. Vilmart & Cie. is not only one of the greatest grower-estates in Champagne, but one of the finest champagne producers of any type in the region.” -Peter Liem, Champagneguide.net In the early days when I first approached Vilmart and started working with Laurent Champs, I had mixed emotions about some of the Champagnes. Please note what “mixed emotions” actually means. It doesn’t mean I doubted the worthiness of the wines or thought they were mediocre. It means I had different opinions about different aspects of the wines. I was thrilled with some, intrigued with all, and wondered whether a couple were too oaky. Earlier in his career, I think Laurent was flying blind on the matter of oak, and his recent Champagnes have wisely—presented a more integrated and elegant profile. Yet he is adamantly a vintner first, before he is a maker of Champagne: “We do wine first, then afterward we do Champagne,” he says. Every base wine, without exception, sees at least ten months in casks of varying size and newness. Once in a while there’s a brief disconnect between fruit and wood immediately after disgorgement, but 2-3 years on the cork make for a dramatic metamorphosis. Matter of fact, I’ve found Vilmart among the most food-friendly of all my Champagnes, because they’re so gracious, so vinous, so lordly in their carriage. It’s clear to me Vilmart is a Champagne estate of unassailable consequence, a must-have for anyone Interested in the possibilities of this most suavely powerful and graceful of all wines. Angelo Gaja took over the family business in 1970 and, as he says: "The challenge was to maintain the basic power and depth of Nebbiolo while polishing the wines to give them richer colour, fuller fruit, better balance and a more refined style." In pursuit of this aim Gaja replanted many of the vineyards, installed temperature-controlled, stainless steel tanks, introduced the concept of ageing wines in small oak barrels and began releasing single vineyard Barbarescos. Most controversial of all, Gaja planted some Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay on prime Barbaresco land. Today Gaja has 101 hectares of vineyards divided into 32 separate plots and produces around 30,000 cases of wine a year.
