Jean-Baptiste Geoffroy, who has 14 hectares in the Vallée de la Marne, is the fifth generation in his family to grow grapes in the region. While his family has always made a little wine, they began to emphasize Champagne production in the bad years after World War II, when they were unable to sell their grapes to the big houses. In the 1970’s Mr. Geoffroy’s father decided to keep all the grapes and turn them into Champagne. Walking through a hillside vineyard in Cumières overlooking the Marne, Mr. Geoffroy’s parcels were easy to distinguish from the others. The lush green grass growing between his rows of bare vines was evidence of his distaste for chemical pesticides and herbicides. "If you don't have passion, you won't make very good Champagne," he said as he strolled the vineyard, waving at local hunters who also walked the rows, shotguns in hand, searching for rabbits and pheasants. While this prominent grower estate has recently moved to the village of Aÿ, the Geoffroy name is inextricably linked to that of Cumières, where the family has winegrowing roots that date back to the 17th century. Today Jean-Baptiste Geoffroy and his father René farm 14 hectares of vines, 11 of which are in Cumières. A few parcels are located just across the border to the west in the adjacent village of Damery, while the rest is all meunier in the nearby village of Fleury-la-Rivière. Geoffroy’s vines average about 20 years of age, and the oldest are from 1926. Viticulture is described as lutte intégrée, or “integrated pest control”—it is heavily aimed at sustainability, eschewing all chemical weedkillers and employing methods such as the planting of cover crops, tilling of the soil and the encouraged habitation of predatory insects to combat vine pests.

["Country_France","Magnum Champagne party","Pick of the week_Pick Off the Week","Price_$101 - $250","Rating_88","Region_Champagne","Section 2_Large Format","Size_1.5 L","Type_Champagne","Type_Rose","Type_Sparkling","Varietal_Pinot Noir","Vintage_NV","Vintagerange_Less 1950","Weight_7.00","Winery_Rene Geoffroy
"option1":"Default Title","option2":null,"option3":null
["Default Title
["//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1997/1819/products/A1300.jpg?v=1533584162
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1997/1819/products/A1300.jpg?v=1533584162
Title

Country: France

Region: Champagne

Vintage: NV

Size: 1.5 L

These days, many of the grower-producers are selling all the Champagne they can make. Ambonnay Pinot Noir seems to be the sweetest, most Volnay-like in the Montagne de Reims. Bouzy, in contrast, is darker but more earthy, while Aÿ is firmer with less overt berried fruit. The Ambonnay signature might be strawberry, forest-floor, sweet-100s. All of which are certainly present in Billiot’s wines. -Terry Theise “Billiot’s five hectares of vines are all in Ambonnay, spread over 18 parcels. About 30 hectares located in five municipalities among the most appreciated for 'Aglianico del Vulture' history. The whole process goes through with total respect of environment, since our vine growers have always worked with secular love and passion for their land. This is the way we follow to make wines with the ambitious aim of being worthy ambassadors of our land of origin as well as promoters of the 'Aglianico del Vulture', which is a hard, though generous variety; also the most tardive (since harvest usually falls between November and December), but elegant for those who can wait! The ageing period takes place in caves dug into volcanic tuff which date back to 1600 and belonged to the "Franciscan monks", in a wonderful itinerary full of history, tradition, human labor and love! It 's the story of a friendship: Rino Botte and Gerardo Giuratrabocchetti.
"}

With its slightly warmer temperatures, this area is particularly prized for its Pinot Noir grapes. Combined with the Kimmeridgian limestone sub soils, the champagnes retain freshness similar to Chablis. Dominique Moreau created the estate in 2005 with a vision to produce a series of single-vineyard, single varietal, single vintage Champagnes from biodynamically grown grapes that are farmed with meticulous care. Dominique named her estate after her grandmother, Marie Courtin, whom she describes as a “woman of the earth”. Her wines come from a hillside vineyard of 35-40 year old, massale-selection Pinot Noir.The combination of low yields, clay-limestone soils (with bands of Kimmeridgian) and an east/southeast exposure gives the wines both power and cut, with an intense brininess and minerality at their core. The estate makes two cuvees, “Resonance” and “Efflorescence”, the former fermented in stainless steel, the latter in used barriques. The grapes for Efflorescence tend to come from the bottom of the hill, which she says “has greater power and potential”. At harvest, the grapes are all harvested by hand. The wines are fermented with natural yeasts that have been selected from their vineyards and cultivated separately. These native yeasts are used for both the primary and secondary fermentations. Lastly, there is no dosage added upon disgorgement. Dominique embraces a spiritual philosophy in her production and viticulture. In one particular technique, she uses pendulums (often used in energy healing practices) in both the vineyard and cellar to aid in evaluating both the evolution of the grapes on the vine as well as the wine during elevage. She explains that the pendulum changes its natural rhythm and swing based on the energy emitted from a living being, whether person, vineyard, or wine. The names of the wines carry spiritual significance for Dominique as well. “Resonance” refers to the balancing energies of earth and sky that affect the creation of a wine from its surrounding terroir. For Dominique, “Efflorescence” refers to “something that evolves in perpetuity”. Starting with the evolution encouraged by the small oxygen exchange in barrel, she feels that this wine in particular will show a very different face at each stage of its development in bottle. She recommends that both wines be served in traditional white wine glasses to allow for their development through increased aeration.

["Country_France","Price_$101 - $250","Rating_90","Rating_92","Region_Champagne","Size_1.5 L","Type_Champagne","Type_Sparkling","Varietal_Pinot Noir","Vintage_NV","Vintagerange_MV and NV","Weight_7.00","Winery_Marie-Courtin
"option1":"Default Title","option2":null,"option3":null
["Default Title
["//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1997/1819/products/1654-efflorescence-NV--1.5L.jpg?v=1516736925
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1997/1819/products/1654-efflorescence-NV--1.5L.jpg?v=1516736925
Title

Country: France

Region: Champagne

Varietal: Pinot Noir

Vintage: NV

Size: 1.5 L

Champagne Marie Courtin is located in the village of Polisot in the Cote des Bars, in the southern part of the Champagne region. Born in 1974, he represents the 5th generation of vine growers on the soils of Volnay. After completing his technical formation at enology school in Beaune, Nicolas put his knowledge into practice, staging at Domaine Joseph Voillot in Volnay, Domaine Louis Latour in Ardeche and Domaine Vieux Telegraphe in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Anxious to learn other farming and winemaking techniques, he went to work in South Africa at Domaine Boschendal Stellenbosch in 1995, followed by Château Cardonne, owned by Château Lafite-Rothchild in Bordeaux. Upon his return home to his family’s Domaine (Rossignol-Jeanniard) Nicolas began vinifying in 1994. However, it was not long before he started his own Estate. In 1997, he acquired approximately 7.5 acres spread over the communes of Volnay, Pommard, Beaune, Aloxe-Corton and Pernand- Vergelesses. In 1998, he increased his vineyard holdings by about 3.5 acres.

The Domaine is located in Volnay, between Meursault and Pommard.

This estate is not exactly new: Jean-Paul’s father has been producing champagne under the Marc Hébrart name since 1964 and has been a member of the Special Club since 1985. Hébrart farms 14 hectares of vines on 65 different sites in 6 villages: the 1er cru vineyards of Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, Avenay, Val d’Or and Bisseuil and the grand crus villages of Aÿ as well as Chouilly and Oiry in the Côte des Blancs. Each parcel is always vinified separately in glass lined stainless steel and ceramic tanks. He is slowly phasing out the ceramic as it is more difficult to control the temperature. Hébrart is also experimenting barrel fermentation and indigenous yeast fermentation for some of his older vine parcels. Using these new techniques Jean-Paul has made an alternative Téte de Cuvee (2004 vintage dated) called Rive Gauche-Rive Droite, named for the sites on both sides of the Marne that comprise of the blend. These old vine parcels are fermented and aged in 205 liter four year old barrique (without battonage) before being bottled sur latté. Jean-Paul hand selects grapes, uses a Bucher press, and is experimenting with fermentation in petite cuvee. Hébrart doesn’t block malolactic fermentation and does all remuage by hand. Peter Liem writes of Champagne Hébrart on Champgneguide.net: “Hébrart’s wines have a broad appeal: if you like to think about your wines, they’re intellectually engaging enough to satisfy you; on the other hand, if you’re just looking to drink, they’re simply delicious. The wines are full and generous without being weighty, complex and soil-driven without being demanding. Overall, the entire range is of consistently high quality, and represents excellent value for the money.” Undeniably, Mareuil should belong to the grand cru villages. Most of the vineyards reach almost the same quality as those of Aÿ. In their youth, what may distinguish a Mareuil wine from an Aÿ wine is a hawthorn-like flowery bouquet. On aging, the wines become practically impossible to tell apart. -Richard Juhlin, 4000 Champagnes “Hébrart represents a departure from the other producers in this portfolio, for Jean-Paul’s wines marry the top Pinot Noir sites of the Vallée de la Marne with Grand Cru Chardonnay sites in the Côte des Blancs. Hébrart’s wines are buoyant and lithe with deft integrations of minerality and juicy fruit. The fruit of Mareuil pinot noir I unlike any I know in Champagne: firmer and less malty than Aÿ, altogether less chunky than Bouzy, not unlike Verzy but richer, far more comme il faut than the savage power of Verzenay, less softly perfumey than Ambonnay, less smoky than Cumières. For many years Gruaud-Larose was owned by the négociants Cordier, who also own Château Talbot. It was sold in 1993 to the French conglomerate, Alcastel Alstom, which in turn sold it to the Taillan Group, owners of Chasse-Spleen and Haut-Bages-Libéral, in 1997. The talented Georges Pauli has remained as régisseur and winemaker throughout all these changes. Gruaud-Larose has 84 hectares of vineyards located on a gravel-rich plateau just to the west of Château Beychevelle. The first harvest sold was the 2002 vintage under the brands of El Nido and Clio. In the 2009 campaign, we made the first harvest of Corteo, supplementing the current range of wines from Bodegas El Nido. The winery is placed in the Valley of the Aragona, 10 kilometers north of the town of Jumilla, in the "top boundary", so named because it is the highest altitude in the municipality. The vineyards, located in the surrounding of the winery are planted on soils mostly of limestone and very stony surface. You could drive through the village a hundred times without knowing it was there, yet behind these simple, unassuming wooden doors, lies one of Champagne’s great treasures. While the Laval family has been growing vines for four generations, Georges Laval began producing estate-bottled champagne in 1971. His son Vincent joined the estate after finishing his studies in 1991, and has been in charge of the cellars since 1996. Laval’s vineyard holdings comprise just 2.5 hectares, including a half-hectare of meunier in Chambrecy, in the Vallée de l’Ardre in the western Montagne de Reims, that is sold to the négoce. The other two hectares are all in the premier cru village of Cumières, spread over seven parcels. Average vine age is over 30 years, and the oldest vines of the estate are over 70 years of age. The Lavals have been practicing organic viticulture since 1971, certified by Ecocert. “It’s a little more difficult to work organically than conventionally,” says Vincent Laval. He notes that having larger parcels of vines makes it easier to work organically, with less pollution from neighbors, and over the years the Lavals have traded parcels of land whenever possible in order to assemble larger blocks of vines. In the cellar, the grapes are pressed in a traditional Coquard vertical press that holds a mere 2,000 kilograms—the minimum size allowed in Champagne—in order to ensure maximum quality and control over individual parcels. Laval’s wines are harvested ripe and almost never chaptalized, and fermentation takes place in barrel, with indigenous yeasts. The wines are bottled late, usually about ten months after the harvest, and they are neither fined, filtered nor cold-stabilized. While Laval is not against the use of sulfur, he does try to limit its use as much as possible.

["Country_France","New Arrivals_New","Price_$251 - above","Rating_90","Rating_92","Region_Champagne","Size_1.5 L","Type_Champagne","Type_Sparkling","Varietal_Chardonnay","Varietal_Pinot Meunier","Varietal_Pinot Noir","Vintage_2012","Weight_7.00","Winery_Georges Laval
"option1":"Default Title","option2":null,"option3":null
["Default Title
["//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1997/1819/products/A1844.jpg?v=1525267153
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1997/1819/products/A1844.jpg?v=1525267153
Title

Country: France

Region: Champagne

Varietal: Chardonnay; Pinot Noir; Pinot Meunier

Vintage: NV

Size: 1.5 L

This tiny, impeccably-run estate in Cumières is known only to a select few connoisseurs of champagne.
