Located in the Sil River Valley, the D.O. Bierzo is the largest in the province of León. The area is a fertile plain surrounded by mountains that protects crops from the extreme wet and cold wind that comes from the Atlantic Ocean, which is very close.
Most Spanish wines have a great Mediterranean climate influence, but in the case of Bierzo wines, the influence is Atlantic. This makes the wines have a fresher and more balanced acidity.
Some wines from this terroir tend to have great aging potential, good resistance to aging in oak barrels. They are usually very expressive on the nose, and very balanced and tasty on the palate.
Among some representative wines of this region, we have: Pétalos del Bierzo, As Sortes Godello, Ultreia St-Jacques. Of course, don’t forget to check this section of Bierzo wines, where you’ll find more varieties.
