Once a region of traditional winemaking, Priorat lost many vineyards in the 20th century to phylloxera. Then in the late 1980s Spanish and international winemakers revived the region’s wine industry. In 1988 Daphne Glorian became part of that new wave when she purchased terraced vineyards outside of the village of Gratallops in Priorat and started making wine. Although she had no viticultural experience, she was soon getting advice from some of the leading lights of the Spanish wine renaissance, including Rene Barbier and Alvaro Palacios. By the 18th century the region was famous for its white dessert wines, but changing tastes and a lack of quality standards by producers resulted in diminishing interest in the wines. In recent decades a new generation of producers has put the region’s dessert wines back on the map, and among those producers are Claudie and Bruno Bilancini, a couple who in 1992 began working vineyards from the historic Chateau Tirecule La Graviere. Their first vintages were commercially successful and in 1997 the couple purchased the estate. The estate produces several dessert wines and a dry white wine, all made from Semillon and Muscadelle. For 157 years the auction – which is a charitable event benefitting a hospital built in the 15th century -- has served as a bellwether for growers, negociants and collectors to gauge the quality of new vintage. The fine Burgundies offered to the participants in the Hospices de Beaune auction are made in very limited quantities, and they represent the best of traditional Burgundian winemaking.\u003c\/p\u003e"}

Still operated by the Krug family, the house specializes in prestige cuvees in what is generally considered to be a traditional, elegant style. Krug Grand Cuvee, which accounts for about 75% of the house’s production, is generally made up of at least eight vintages and it is a blend of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay. Krug Vintage Champagnes are admired for their ability to age and become more complex, and they are generally at least 10 years old before they are released. A Krug Vintage is typically 30-50% Pinot Noir, 18-28% Pinot Meunier and 30-40% Chardonnay. The house also makes a widely-admired Rose and Clos du Mesnil, which is 100% Chardonnay. The estate includes 49.4 acres of vineyard planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The vines on average are 15 years old. The Domaine is the largest owners of each of the red wine grand crus.\n\nThe wines are made by Bernard Noblet in succession to his father André Noblet.
