Jean-Baptiste Geoffroy, who has 14 hectares in the Vallée de la Marne, is the fifth generation in his family to grow grapes in the region. While his family has always made a little wine, they began to emphasize Champagne production in the bad years after World War II, when they were unable to sell their grapes to the big houses. In the 1970’s Mr. Geoffroy’s father decided to keep all the grapes and turn them into Champagne. Walking through a hillside vineyard in Cumières overlooking the Marne, Mr. Geoffroy’s parcels were easy to distinguish from the others. The lush green grass growing between his rows of bare vines was evidence of his distaste for chemical pesticides and herbicides. "If you don't have passion, you won't make very good Champagne," he said as he strolled the vineyard, waving at local hunters who also walked the rows, shotguns in hand, searching for rabbits and pheasants. While this prominent grower estate has recently moved to the village of Aÿ, the Geoffroy name is inextricably linked to that of Cumières, where the family has winegrowing roots that date back to the 17th century. Today Jean-Baptiste Geoffroy and his father René farm 14 hectares of vines, 11 of which are in Cumières. A few parcels are located just across the border to the west in the adjacent village of Damery, while the rest is all meunier in the nearby village of Fleury-la-Rivière. Geoffroy’s vines average about 20 years of age, and the oldest are from 1926. Viticulture is described as lutte intégrée, or “integrated pest control”—it is heavily aimed at sustainability, eschewing all chemical weedkillers and employing methods such as the planting of cover crops, tilling of the soil and the encouraged habitation of predatory insects to combat vine pests.

{"@context":"https://schema.org/","@type":"Product","name":"Rene Geoffroy _ NV - Rose de Saignee Brut _ 1.5 L","image":"https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1997/1819/products/A1300.jpg","description":"France Champagne NV 1.5 L These days, many of the grower-producers are selling all the Champagne they can make. This estate is not exactly new: Jean-Paul’s father has been producing champagne under the Marc Hébrart name since 1964 and has been a member of the Special Club since 1985. Hébrart farms 14 hectares of vines on 65 different sites in 6 villages: the 1er cru vineyards of Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, Avenay, Val d’Or and Bisseuil and the grand crus villages of Aÿ as well as Chouilly and Oiry in the Côte des Blancs. Each parcel is always vinified separately in glass lined stainless steel and ceramic tanks. He is slowly phasing out the ceramic as it is more difficult to control the temperature. Hébrart is also experimenting barrel fermentation and indigenous yeast fermentation for some of his older vine parcels. Using these new techniques Jean-Paul has made an alternative Téte de Cuvee (2004 vintage dated) called Rive Gauche-Rive Droite, named for the sites on both sides of the Marne that comprise of the blend. These old vine parcels are fermented and aged in 205 liter four year old barrique (without battonage) before being bottled sur latté. Jean-Paul hand selects grapes, uses a Bucher press, and is experimenting with fermentation in petite cuvee. Hébrart doesn’t block malolactic fermentation and does all remuage by hand. Peter Liem writes of Champagne Hébrart on Champgneguide.net: “Hébrart’s wines have a broad appeal: if you like to think about your wines, they’re intellectually engaging enough to satisfy you; on the other hand, if you’re just looking to drink, they’re simply delicious. The wines are full and generous without being weighty, complex and soil-driven without being demanding. Overall, the entire range is of consistently high quality, and represents excellent value for the money.” Undeniably, Mareuil should belong to the grand cru villages. Most of the vineyards reach almost the same quality as those of Aÿ. In their youth, what may distinguish a Mareuil wine from an Aÿ wine is a hawthorn-like flowery bouquet. On aging, the wines become practically impossible to tell apart. -Richard Juhlin, 4000 Champagnes “Hébrart represents a departure from the other producers in this portfolio, for Jean-Paul’s wines marry the top Pinot Noir sites of the Vallée de la Marne with Grand Cru Chardonnay sites in the Côte des Blancs. Hébrart’s wines are buoyant and lithe with deft integrations of minerality and juicy fruit. The fruit of Mareuil pinot noir I unlike any I know in Champagne: firmer and less malty than Aÿ, altogether less chunky than Bouzy, not unlike Verzy but richer, far more comme il faut than the savage power of Verzenay, less softly perfumey than Ambonnay, less smoky than Cumières. Indeed if it were Burgundy, Mareuil could well be Morey-St.-Denis” -Terry Theise

{"@context":"https://schema.org/","@type":"Product","name":"Marc Hebrart _ NV - Rose Brut 1er cru _ 750 ml.","image":"https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1997/1819/products/A2154.jpg","description":"France Champagne Pinot Noir / Chardonnay NV 750 ml.

//
{"@context":"https://schema.org/","@type":"Product","name":"Rene Geoffroy _ NV - Rose de Saignee _ 750 ml.","image":"https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1997/1819/products/1548-Champgne-Geoffroy-Rose-de-Saignee.jpg","description":"France Champagne Pinot Noir NV 750 ml.

{"@context":"https://schema.org/","@type":"Product","name":"Rene Geoffroy _ NV - Blanc de Rose _ 750 ml.","image":"https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1997/1819/products/A1841.jpg","description":"France Champagne Chardonnay / Pinot Noir NV 750 ml. The owner, Christian Moueix, has had ownership – at least in part – since 1982, and ran the estate concurrently with his family wine business in Bordeaux until 2008. The estate is based around the Napanook vineyard, which is notable for being one of the first sites planted to grapes in the Napa Valley. George Yount, who gives his name to the Yountville appellation, set up a vineyard here in 1838 and, since then, the 50-hectare (124-acre) site has been owned by all manner of Napa stalwarts. Moueix went into partnership in 1982 with Robin Lail and Marcia Smith, the daughters of Inglenook's John Daniel Jr, and, in 1995, took over as the sole owner. Since then, a second vineyard has been added to the Dominus portfolio, this time in Oakville. The Napanook vineyard sits on the edge of the Mayacamas Mountains, rising slightly into the hills. It is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, although there are plantings of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. This is reflected in Dominus Estate's flagship red, which is predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with some Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc – although the exact proportions depend on the vintage. Still operated by the Krug family, the house specializes in prestige cuvees in what is generally considered to be a traditional, elegant style. Krug Grand Cuvee, which accounts for about 75% of the house’s production, is generally made up of at least eight vintages and it is a blend of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay. Krug Vintage Champagnes are admired for their ability to age and become more complex, and they are generally at least 10 years old before they are released. A Krug Vintage is typically 30-50% Pinot Noir, 18-28% Pinot Meunier and 30-40% Chardonnay. The house also makes a widely-admired Rose and Clos du Mesnil, which is 100% Chardonnay. The estate includes 49.4 acres of vineyard planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The vines on average are 15 years old. A few parcels are located just across the border to the west in the adjacent village of Damery, while the rest is all meunier in the nearby village of Fleury-la-Rivière. The Veuve Clicquot vineyards cover 393 hectares of land belonging to Veuve Clicquot to supply grapes to the House. It spreads over the very best Champagne growth areas: 12 of the 17 Grands Crus and 18 of the 44 Premiers Crus. The vineyards boast an exceptional average classification of close to 96%, a ranking that is based on the winegrowing properties of the terroir and the quality of the grapes produced. The vines are mostly planted on the hillside where the soil is the shallowest and exposure to the sun is at a maximum. 1995 began like the 3 previous years with a mild, wet winter. Budbreak took place between 6 and 17 April, one week ahead of time, given the average date of budbreak over the last few years. Some vineyards in the Marne and Aube were affected by frost at the end of April and mid-May but fortunately the House’s vines were not damaged. After a short cool period, hot, nearly summery weather conditions occurred and the end of flowering was excellent. July was particularly hot and stormy and the threat of mildew had never been as strong since 1958. Constant attention and excellent integrated control meant the future harvest could be saved. As the harvest approached the grapes matured rapidly, and a late attack of botrytis had no lasting effects. Harvesting for the Chardonnay began on 21 September, with Pinot Noir and Meunier following one week later. Staggering the dates of the harvest and selective picking meant good-quality grapes were brought in, thus maximising the potential quality of the vintage. The balance of musts was excellent. The 1995 vintage is similar to that of 1988, with an average strength of 9.5°GL and acidity levels of 9 g/l. The wine promises great ageing potential. The lots at Bouzy planted with Pinot Noir which go to make our red wines were harvested on 2 October. the cuvée The basic blend is made up of 53 % Pinot Noir from the grand crus in the Ay (Grande Vallée de la Marne) and Verzenay, Verzy, Ambonnay and Bouzy vineyards (Montagne de Reims). The other 32 % is composed of Chardonnay using three grand crus, Avize, Oger and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, from the Côte des Blancs area. The Grande Dame Rosé 1995 is obtained with the addition of 15% of red wine made entirely from Pinot Noir grapes from the village of Bouzy. The vast majority of grapes comes from the Clos Colin, one of our best lots situated in the heart of this Grand Cru. the tasting The Grande Dame Rosé 1995 is limpid and has a magnificent warm, very deep colour with glowing bronze tones. Effervescence is fine and long-lasting. The quality and distinction of this vintage are mirrored in the intense, elegant nose. Notes of red fruits (raspberry, fresh strawberry) and toasted aromas (grilled flavours, gingerbread, dried fruit, honey) complement each other to perfection and bestow an unforgettable bouquet on this wine. In the mouth the wine confirms the complexity of the nose. With a rare aromatic concentration, the Grande Dame Rosé 1995 reveals exceptional fullness and volume and a dense, deep texture, with the Pinot Noir maintaining its structure. The silkiness so characteristic of La Grande Dame is already present and with time this sensation of mellowness will be accentuated. The extremely harmonious finish, together with the smoothness and mellowness of this wine, draws us into a world that radiates sensuality.

{"@context":"https://schema.org/","@type":"Product","name":"Veuve Clicquot _ 1995 - La Grande Dame Rose _ 750 ml.","image":"https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1997/1819/products/1364-La-Grande-Dame-Champagne-Brut-Rose-1995.jpg","description":"France Champagne Pinot Noir / Chardonnay 1995 750 ml.
